A huge part of their history, the brand built and raised its Suzuki GSX-RR amongst the other MotoGP championship rides of our time. The bike was phenomenal by all means and continued to progress in performance over the years but now the motorcycle manufacturer is coming away from the track. Scroll down for more information... The final race The final race of the 2022 MotoGP World Championship season has ended, leaving Suzuki saying goodbye to not only the season but the championship as well. Finishing in style, Alex Rins led from the start to finish in Valencia GP, taking a rightfully earnt victory. Joan Mir displayed another spectacular performance and took a solid sixth place. The team as a whole over the years has achieved a huge amount of records, wins and championship points. The story of their racing career has been quite the adventure starting a decade ago with the very first prototype in 2012. Although not confirmed it is speculated that Suzuki is focusing their efforts on developing a motorcycle for the MotoE Championship but that's yet to be confirmed by official sources. Well, I managed to achieve exactly what I wanted: another win with my team. This one, being at home and being our last together, tastes extra special and its very emotional. Over the years Suzuki and I have celebrated some really beautiful victories, but also shared many beautiful moments as a family. Ill miss everybody so much, and Ill carry the lessons with me for the rest of my career. Im happy to take a pretty solid finish in my final race with Suzuki, especially after a tough few weeks. Winning a title with this team is something Ill keep in my heart forever, weve worked relentlessly during all our years together, but in 2020 everything just came together for us and it was simply fantastic. Thank you to the whole team for their help. Today Alex did a very impressive job, getting the holeshot and leading the whole race, thank you to him for this final victory, and also to Joan for a nice 6th place. Finally, thank you also to all the staff for their work during all the years. We have been a very good group of people, and we always tried hard to get the best results. Victory today in Valencia! What a great reward for the team. Im very proud of the staff, the riders, and the engineers in Japan not only for today but for the whole season. We had a fighting spirit until the end, and we leave with a World Title and many victories and podiums. What more could we ask for? The only thing better would have been a double podium. But Alex showed, once again, how competitive he and our bike are. And Joan did a great job. My time with Suzuki has been short but very sweet. Working with an iconic brand, with superb people, and a great bike has been a big pleasure for me, and I think we can bow out with our heads high. Thoughts on the bike... How were the engine, power and torque? "I quite liked the 950, it offered playful power which you can really spring around town or enjoy on an urban ride. It boasts a much lower gear grunt, with gears one through to three offering a substantial length and characterful exhaust tone. You get tons of torque to play with which is great for street riding and it's definitely not a stranger to takingoff first from every set of traffic lights. As you'd expect from a newer motorcycle, the gear shifts were as smooth as marble and the clutch light on the touch - perfect if you're commuting or using the bike for regular travel. I personally couldn't fault the GSX-S' engine as it does exactly what I'd expect from a high quality Suzuki bike. It's a bike that's available on the A2 market as it can be restricted; however, it gives the rider an instant power upgrade when they derestrict it. If you hold a restricted licence, the GSX-S950 truly takes home the bacon as it's fun to ride and gives off 'big bike' vibes." How are the brakes, handling and riding position? "Perfect for the average street rider, the brakes offer a grippy yet progressive response that will be sure to keep you out of trouble. If you are a boisterous bad-boy rider, perhaps a change of pads is necessary as the brakes are a little insensitive on the first bite - but for the average street rider, you won't run into any problems. Handling the 950 can be a bit challenging. It's definitely not a motorcycle ready for you to put your knee down, but it offers good agility for everyday urban riding. The riding position on the other hand cannot be faulted.I was in the saddle for a couple of hours and didn't get uncomfortable for even a moment. There's an easy reach to the handlebars, the controls are accessible without the need to move your hand around and the knee bend angle is more than acceptable." Technology - Was it useful? "The bike comes with a keen package of technology including a Selectable Traction Control System, Ride-By-Wire throttle, Easy Start System and informative LCD display. I quite liked how crisp the LCD display was -there wereno unnecessary graphics or information I wouldn't use on a day-to-day ride - it was precise and crisp. The bike comes with LED headlights and tail light which give great visibility in both day and night conditions, and they're styled a little like what I'd imagine a spaceship's headlights to be like. Funky! Another point to add is that it comes with a handy average fuel consumption meter and tank range indicator -for any daily commuter like myself this can be really helpful." What modifications would you make to this bike? "Like I mentioned before, I would probably want to upgrade the brakes on this motorcycle. The bike has substantial power but limited braking capability at higher stopping speeds. This is mainly dependent on what style of riding you do though. You may find there is more than enough power behind the lever pull. This bike sounds great straight out of the factory so an upgrade to the exhaust system wouldn't be necessary, however I would be intrigued to hear the beast roar at full potential - perhaps with a RaceFit end can! I think if you were using this bike for long commutes on the motorway, a screen may be a wise investment too. There's not much in the way of wind resistance on this stock motorcycle and although it offers a comfortable riding position, it could become tiring after an hour with high winds." The verdict... "I'd say that overall this bike is a good bet for the restricted rider - it offers everything you could want from a larger motorcycle with accessibility on an A2 licence. The bike sounds absolutely great straight from the factory and offers a beast-like roar in gears one through to six, with a street-like grunt to give you joy at every traffic light. The bike offers substantial handling, braking and comfort whilst boasting a premium feel, and features like the informative display, gun metal forks and styling are taken directly from its larger capacity brother, the GSX-S1000. It's an exciting bike to ride and you'll definitely have some fun on it wherever you are!" Test ride this bike... Over this time, Suzuki has paid the model great attention with various model upgrades, remodels and refinements into what we see today. Although the model has received many upgrades, it still remains one of the more affordable motorcycles on today's market. The First Generation The "Curvy" with carburettors Due to its curved metal bodywork, the original SV grew the nickname "Curvy" SV650. Rocking this rounder design the bike pumped out a satisfactory 64hp within a 645cc, 90-degree, L-twin, two carburettor, liquid-cooled 8-valve engine. Although the power wasn't something to write home about, the bike weighed a mere wet weight of 189kg and achieved0-60mph in3.5 seconds. ThisSV650 is one of the new century's biggest success stories, and it all stems from the model keeping riders happy. Suzuki also offered a faired version, which boasted a more "race" style. The Second Generation Enter the fuel injector In 2003, Suzuki updated their muchloved model considerably. Although production was underway, these models were almost entirely sold in the States - only if you were lucky, you'd find one on the English market at the time. The biggest changes with this model included fuel injection -a game-changer inengine innovation,offering an improved cold/hot starting performance. Other improvements include a digital display, updated frame, increased durability and performance tweaks - giving more power andtorque, now offering 73hp and 64Nm of torque. Like the traditional model, the second-gen was available both naked and faired, meaning it was open to a broader appeal amongstriders worldwide. With the increased power, the bike could keep up with middleweight inline-four motorcycles until highway speeds, due to the bike's low-down torque and feather-like weight. The Challenge Emerged Something fresh takes the stage In 2009 Suzuki replaced the SV with the SFV650 Gladius, in an effort to keep the model new and exciting for customers. The model kept most of the original looks, besides the headlight and small parts of the motorcycle fairing. This model took centre stage with an improved engine, producing more low-down torque and bolstered mid-range power. With the styling and engine, refinements resulted ina slightly heavier motorcycle, now sitting at a wet weight of 202kg. Although an upgraded version, sadly the SFV650 received a lack of interest compared to the more original SV650 models and didn't quite make that "cult status", making them almost a rare find on the used market today. You may find one at a reasonable price and if it's in good condition, it'll still offer you fantastic Suzuki durability. The latest version Bringing sexy back After a much-anticipated return, Suzuki brought back the SV650 and made sure it would not only reappear, but also trump previous versions on the spec sheet. With aims to keep weight to a minimum, they did so successfully at 195kg -even with ABS! The engine was once again remastered, with updates for higher power and similar torque, giving riders what they sought. One component that did remain from the Gladius was the low seat, with a height of just 31 inches. Suzuki has now implemented a similar version of the SV650 named the SV650X.This is a "Cafe Racer" style SV650 and comes with various other upgrades, (mostly cosmetic),including a paint scheme, fairing fowl, clip-on handlebars and tuck & roll seat. Is the SV650 worth the purchase today? In our opinion, Suzuki has nailed the latest model of SV650. Through refinement and re-tuning, they've managed to create an exciting bike in an affordable price bracket - it definitely becomes a benchmark contender for middleweight naked bikes. They've managed to cut back on weight whilst giving the rider more features, such as low RPM assist, ABS, a modern display and an easy start system. What's the verdict? What did you think of the engine, power and torque "What a machine! The Suzuki GSX-S1000GT is an almighty force not to be taken lightly. It pulls and pulls giving you a stimulating thrill in gears one through to six. I especially like the gear lengths and their silky smooth performance. This bike is so progressively smooth you'd think you're riding a twist and go. Additionally, I liked the rev range available, red lining at 11,750rpm there was lots to play with and plenty of passing power. The torque available is buckets of fun andfrom traffic light to traffic light you'll have no problem swiftly yet smoothly taking off. You'll be smiling from ear to ear when you take off at the lights, leaving everyone behind you in your mirrors!" How was the handling, brakes &riding position? "With experience predominantly onnaked motorcycles, I was concerned that this bike would feel heavy to move. Howeverit handled with surprising ease, giving confidence-inspiring agility you can really play with in the corners. For me, brakes are a sensitive subject, (if you pardon the pun).With a bikeof this size I'd expect big things. With Brembo taking the reins, you get enough stopping force -but it lacks a little off the lever. I would recommend you try this bike out for yourself though as this could just be personal preference. There is not one thing I would change about the riding position as it offers a relaxed yet engaging ride. Duringmy time on the bike I didn't get uncomfortable once. There was a relaxed reach to the gripswith lots of leg room from the pegs, plus the controls on the handlebars were well laid out.I was not blessed by the height Gods and am a fairly short guy at 5"8, but I could flat foot this motorcycle noproblem." Technology - was it useful? "This bike is packed to the brim with helpful technology and accessibility. First off I really loved the TFT display.It was clear, precise and provided all the necessary riding information I could possibly want or need. Connecting it to your smartphone was easy too -it gives you an array of options and apps to use including phone, music and map navigation - as well as a library of third-party apps too. The SDMS (Suzuki Drive Mode Selector) is fantastic, offering a range of different manageable rider modes you may wish to use - especially useful for the variety of different weather conditions we see here in the U.K. On top of the rider modes, you also get a five-level plus off traction control which let me modify the bike to the way I like it. The cruise control on this bike was fairly easy to use. With a few simple button presses you get easy riding, which I feel would be ideal for longer journeys. Other creature comforts included quick shifter (bi-directional) and low rpm assist." What modifications would you make to this bike? "As I mentioned before, I'd perhaps swap out the brake pads if I was predominantly doing short journeys on this bike. As the majority of the power on offer only appears once the pads and discs are up to fuller temperatures. Although the exhaust note on this motorcycle is by standard something special, adding a slip-on can could quite possibly blow my mind - I'd be excited to hear what an Akrapovic alternative would sound like. Then depending on my riding use, I'd quite like to add panniers and a top box, enhancing the bike's obviousgreat touring capabilities." How would yourate the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT overall? "Wowza what a ride. Overall I had a really good time on the bike. Itis definitely a great contender in the Sports Tourer category, giving other brands a sure run for their money - especially as it sits at such an accessible price point considering how much you get for your wonga. Personally I really like the look of this model...lots of sharp bodywork, LED lighting and metallic colours throughout. From all angles it was photogenic, let's put it that way. The bike performed well on straights and in corners, it provided well above-par agile capability. The suspension was noticeably cushiony and provided great resistance to our pothole-filled roads! On top of everything I liked about this bike, almost instantly you realise the soundtrack from its stock exhaust is remarkable and there was not one red light I wasn't tempted to rev like a hooligan. If I was going to buy a Sport Tourer motorcycle, the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT would definitely be worthy of consideration. Try it out, you'll see this for yourself."
